John 2:12-25 – The Temple Cleansed

Proverbs 1:20-33

John 2:12-25

Your worship of him… your belief in him?

Capernaum … his home

Mark 2:1, “A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home“.
John 6:24 … search for Jesus

… in the temple area
Malachi 3:1-4 – ”See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the LORD Almighty.
But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap.  He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the LORD will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness,  and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the LORD, as in days gone by, as in former years.

… cleansing and purification to his Father’s house
… render the temple obsolete

The Reaction of the Authorities (v 18)
Sign = “destroy the temple and he will raise it again in three days.”
Mat 23:38, Luke 13:35, “YOUR house is left to you desolate“.

The Reaction of the Crowd
impressed by the fantastic miracles and signs but …

For Us Today
1)    The building does not matter but you do
1 Cor 3:16-17 – “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?  If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is sacred, and you are that temple.”
2) Do we really belief?
Qu: How would Jesus assess …your/our  worship of him… your belief in him?
