As Christians we believe that the Holy Spirit “indwells and sanctifies the Christian believer.”
Sanctifies us = he helps us to live a God honouring (holy) life.
Why no argument?
… a common gospel.
… serious error when they reject other truths
What does the bible say?
1) The teaching role …
Ezekiel 36:27 … to move us to follow
John 14:26 … “teach you all things and remind you of everything I have said to you”.
the Holy Spirit is NOT working independently of scripture.
2) The obedience role …
Romans 8:12-17 … “by the Spirit, putting to death the misdeeds of the body.”
Galatians 5:22-26, fruit of the Spirit = the outworking of the Spirit working in your life is love, joy, peace patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.
3) The Indwelling role …
The Holy Spirit indwells us, he does not possess us.
1 cor 6:19 …a temple of the Holy Spirit
2 Cor 6:16 … we are the temple of the living God
4) The Deposit role
Ephesians 1:13-14, “marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession”.
Romans 8:23, “having the first fruits of the Spirit.”
Final warnings
- Warning 1 – The Spirit simply becomes a means of me getting what I want or need or desire
- Warning 2 – The work of the Spirit is not associated with the word of God or obedience to the word of God
- Warning 3 – The experience of the spirit power is not connected with obedience to the word of God
- Warning 4 – A wedge is driven in between the work of the Spirit and the word of God.
