God Is Good

Psalm 145:1-21

John 4:1-26

Do you believe that God is Good?
Romans 5:8- “But God demonstrated his love for us in this whilst we were still sinners Christ died for us”
John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”

1)    Is he really good?

What are the pleasures of life we think we are missing out on because we are Christians?

2)    The lie we believe
… God is only good for us for ‘pie in the sky when we die’.
… God does not have our best interests at heart, he does not want us to enjoy life
John 4 … thirst for fulfilment in life
Sin always has a hidden cost.
Hebrews 11:24-26, “By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.  He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.

3)    The goodness of God
Psalm 145
God’s grace … the ultimate expression of God’s goodness.

The practical realities
If I FORGET the goodness of God …

If I know the goodness of God …

A way ahead
a)    Think outside the immediacy of the moment
b)    Assess the real costs and the failed promises of sin
c)    Practice delighting in the goodness of God

Psalm 34:8-10, “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. Fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing. The Lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing”
