Israel on trial… time for the verdict
“Hear this word”
– Speaking to those in power and privilege about how they’ve used it.
– This is the behaviour that led to the exile.
Empty worship (Amos 4:4-5)
– Bethel and Gilgal as places of worship
– Equivalent places of worship for the modern church?
This passage is about God’s people going through the motions without relationship to their God.
Reading the warning signs
– What God had done to get their attention
– A danger for us is to attribute material success or failure to the be reward or punishment
– God claims to show us the better way to live, but this doesn’t make us immune from suffering.
People, prepare to meet your God.
– The reality of God is more than most of us anticipate.
– We might sympathise with Job – we’d like to ask God a few questions every now and then.
– We don’t have to wait for this kind of encounter – God has come to us.
