Deuteronomy 5-6 – When Godliness Is Too Hard

Deuteronomy 5:22-6:25

Deuteronomy 5-6 – When Godliness is Too Hard

Are we tempted to abandon God when life gets hard?

Deuteronomy – Moses addresses Israel on the doorstep of the promised land

What does obedience look like?

A response to God’s power and majesty

Deut 5:29, “Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and to keep my commands always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever”

(“Oh” = “I wish, I desire”)

  • Disciple the next generation – 6:4-9
  • Prepare for the dangers of wealth – 6:10-12
  • Do not follow the gods of the nations – 6:13-19
  • Ensure people do not forget – 6:20-25

Today’s challenge:

Obey him – do we heed God’s warnings to obey his word?

Responsibility to listen – what effort do we make to hear and obey God’s word?

Discipling – are we disciplining the next generation to know, love and serve God?

Problem of wealth – how do we ensure that wealth doesn’t distract us from God?

Problem of other gods – what other ‘gods’ are we tempted to follow?

Problem of going cold – how are we ensuring we follow God along with our families?
