God Is More Gracious Than We Think

Deuteronomy 9:1-29

Romans 9:14-29

Last week:

  • God in his sovereign rule elects those who will receive his promises
  • Is God’s sovereign election of some unfair?
  • If God elects some then why does God still blame us?

Is God Unjust? (v14-18)

“You must be joking”
None of us deserve to be saved.
But God in his mercy chooses to save.
The example of  Pharaoh

Then why does God blame us?

v19 “Then why does God blame us? Who resists his will?”
v20 “Who do you think you are talking back to God?”

a) God has the right to do as he chooses … as a potter has over his clay (v 20-21)

God is NOT against us humbly asking questions
Not simply inanimate clay that he does not care about
BUT … We are in no position to question God?s right to choose.

b) God reveals himself as he is (v22-23)

c) He foretold it all in scripture (v24-29)

Applying to us?

We will never fully understand how God works in this area of life.

  • embrace God’s sovereign right to choose
  • or butt our heads against it

but it will not change the reality of who God is or how he operates.

  1. What would have happened to us if God had been just?
  2. What does your salvation say about God?
  3. What right do we have to question how God acts?
  4. What does God?s patience do to your desire to tell others?
  5. Do you think God would be more likely to save a person who is nice, with good morals and middle class in their thinking?
  6. What are we doing as God?s people to seek God?s glory and proclaim his mercy to even the most unlikely people around?
  7. Do we need to change our thinking about God and ourselves?

Question for Morning Tea

When you decided to follow Jesus, whose choice was it?
