It is sometimes said that “a camel is a horse designed by a committee!” Jokes aside, the humble camel is such a well designed animal that its staying power, especially in the desert, is legendary.
When we were designed it was not by a committee, random selection or mere chance but by the living God. God is not a committee but He is Trinity. This helps us to capture the joyous wonder of our makeup.
The book of beginnings, Genesis, tells us that we are “made in God’s image”. The words used are “let us make man in our own image…male and female He created them…”.
We capture the value of each one of us as we ponder 3 aspects of our makeup which reflect God’s character. God the Father is the initiator of Creation. One of our remarkable abilities is to be able to create things. A visit to an art gallery, a wood workers’ shop, pottery, cake shop, science lab or family kitchen reminds us of this satisfying ability to discover and create. Of course, we need raw materials, whereas God created out of nothing.
God the Son, the Lord Jesus, demonstrated to the world what humble service means. He did this by coming as a baby, then living and serving in a family and a nation, and most clearly when He willingly went to the cross to deal with the sins of the world.
The ability of humans to serve one another whether it be in our family, community or work responsibilities and in the special times of crisis is a great joy that reminds us that we have been created to serve. True happiness, contrary to our biased rebellious nature, is found in service, in giving not getting.
God the Holy Spirit does many things. One is that He makes it possible for us to relate to God. Whether by guiding the Bible writers to write truth, or by opening our eyes and ears to understand God’s love and our need to repent, His work is to enable our relationship with God in the intimate terms of Father-child and Saviour-friend. Human relationships are a reflection of the relationship between the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We were made for relationships and our most joyous moments on earth are found when we are able to enjoy human relationships.
God knew what He was doing when He created us. We are exactly as He intended. None of us should see ourselves or others as insignificant or unimportant.
However we, unlike camels and other animals, are designed to find our real refreshment and staying power from relationship with God. This comes through His Son and is experienced as the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us. Make no mistake about it, we need no committee to advise us, only His clear word to us in Christ whose commitment to us is the guarantee of His loving intentions toward us.
