Matthew 17:1-27 – The Son of Man Must Die

Deuteronomy 18:14-22

Matthew 17:1-27

What’s happened in Matthew so far?

Matthew 17
Jesus is transfigured…
Moses and Elijah…

  • Malachi 4:4-6
  • Matthew 5:17

The BIG point … verse 5.

  • “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased, listen to him”.

…but they also knew that the Messiah would not show up till after Elijah
A crowd, a distressed father, a sick boy and some very confused disciples
… verse 19-21… their lack of faith
… if their faith in Jesus Christ was only the size of a mustard seed
Kingdom work is work that Jesus says, it is work that relies on us to trust him
…changing expectations of the messiah

For us today
1) Be clear who Jesus is
2 Peter 1:12-21
v 16-17 “For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 He received honour and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.

2) The importance of faith in Jesus
…put faith in Jesus Christ for the kingdom work we do.

3) Some concluding thoughts
Firstly, the embarrassing moment for Peter shows how accurately and reliably the actual events were recorded.
Secondly … followers of Jesus do not set up sacred sites.
